Research Mentorship for Women in Computer Science
I enjoy working with students on research projects at the intersection of NLP, HCI, and computational social science/social computing. If you are a female graduate student or a junior or senior undergrad who would like to work with me in this topic, I would love to hear from you! 🤗
This mentorship is meant to support women in computer science, especially for those who are interested in human-centered NLP research.
The end goal of this mentorship is to either give you an experience of what research is or prepare you better for graduate school, or simply to enjoy working together with similar research interests! But of course, there should be a point what to do with something. So I'm expecting a full commitment that will result in a paper (at least, a workshop paper or short conference paper) from this mentorship process.
Possible Projects
Here are some potential topics you can work on!
Human-Agent Collaboration in Professional Workflows
I have 2 potential directions in this topic.
Topic 1 [NLP/ML]: Can we create agents with persona to reflect real professionals' workflows? Can an agent capture an individual's workflow and collaboration style?
Topic 2 [HCI]: What tasks do professionals prefer to delegate to agents? We have a survey data for this.
Demographic Background and Similarity with LLM's Generated Opinions
Continuing my previous work, I have a collection of human demographic backgrounds along with their opinions. Comparing whom LLM opinions align with would be an interesting future work!
Cross-cultural Mental Health Conversations on Social Media
I have done previous work comparing mental health conversations on a peer-to-peer support platform. How do they differ on social media? This work would be more HCI/social computing-oriented.
How to Reach Out

FAQ
How long is the mentorship?
You will have a starter project which takes 3-4 months. After that, we can discuss opportunities to continue the mentorship.
How many hours per week should I expect to commit?
Around 10-20 hours a week.
Do I need prior research or publication experience?
No, but you need familiarity with NLP, HCI, machine learning, or social computing (a course or a project). You need experience with computer science and programming since I am not teaching the basics of computer science.
Do I need to be a computer science major to join?
No, my research area is interdisciplinary and I have collaborated with people from different departments (e.g., bioinformatics, journalism, African American & African studies, economics). But you need to have basic knowledge about computer science, ML, AI, NLP, statistics, and programming.
Who can join this mentorship?
My research mentorship is open to female university students from anywhere in the world, as long as you have reliable internet access and a computer that you can use for research.
You are welcome to apply if you want to gain research experience, work toward a publication, strengthen your preparation for graduate school, explore whether research is the right path for you, or simply enjoy developing and discussing new research ideas. The most important thing is commitment. You do not need to come in with extensive research experience, but I expect you to take the project seriously. Please apply only if you are able to dedicate time and effort to the project.
Is it remote or in person, and how often do we meet?
It will be a remote mentorship. We can decide on the meeting schedule later.
What is expected in this mentorship?
Since this is a research mentorship, the goal is to publish a paper, either a workshop paper or a conference paper. By the end of the starter project period, you must write a paper that can be submitted to a workshop or a conference.
